XIRR: the one return number that handles real life

CAGR assumes one lump sum in, one lump sum out. Real investing is messier — monthly SIPs, a paused year, a partial withdrawal. XIRR (extended internal rate of return) is the single yearly rate that makes the present value of every cash flow — each weighted by its exact date — equal zero. It's the number on your mutual fund statement, and the only fair way to compare investments with irregular timing.

FAQs

How is XIRR calculated?
By solving for the rate r where the sum of amount ÷ (1+r)years-since-first-flow equals zero — found by iterative bisection, the same method Excel's XIRR uses. This page solves it live in your browser.
Can XIRR be negative?
Yes — if you received less than you put in after accounting for timing, XIRR goes negative, showing the yearly erosion rate.
Why doesn't my XIRR match my fund's stated returns?
Stated fund returns are usually point-to-point (lump-sum) CAGR. Your personal XIRR reflects your entry and exit dates — investing through a dip raises your XIRR above the fund's headline number.
What if there's no solution?
XIRR needs at least one negative and one positive flow. All-investments or all-withdrawals have no meaningful rate — the calculator will tell you.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Everything is computed in your browser; nothing leaves your device.
