How your paycheck is taxed in 2026
Four layers come out of gross pay before it reaches you:
- Federal income tax — progressive brackets (10% to 37%). Only income above each threshold is taxed at that rate; the standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married in 2026) comes off first.
- Social Security — flat 6.2% on the first $184,500 of wages (2026 wage base). Earn more than that and the SS bite stops growing.
- Medicare — 1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) / $250,000 (joint).
- State income tax — nine states charge nothing on wages; others are flat or progressive. State figures here are close estimates — states have their own deductions and credits this simplified model does not capture.
Why "what's my hourly rate" matters
A $75,000 salary at 40 hours/week is $36.06/hour — but at 50 hours/week it's $28.85. Converting offers to hourly (and back) is the fastest way to compare jobs with different hours, which is why the converter sits right next to the tax math.
What this leaves out
Local/city taxes (e.g. NYC, Ohio municipalities), state disability insurance (CA, NJ, NY, RI, HI), 401(k) matching, health premiums beyond what you enter, and the 2025 tax law's new tips/overtime deductions (those are claimed at filing time, not in withholding).
